Former Deputy Arrested in Assault Investigation

Former Deputy Justin Woods has been arrested and charged with Battery, Simple Assault, and Violation of Oath of Public Officer.

A Coweta County Deputy is no longer employed following an arrest by the GBI. Deputy Justin Woods is alleged to have hit and tased an inmate that was fully restrained. The investigation is still currently open and GT requests that Coweta County release any body camera or jail camera footage in relation to this incident.

Deputy Woods 2GT Questions if District Attorney Herb Cranford will prosecute or not find enough evidence to prosecute. Deputy Woods was sworn in Coweta County Deputy on March 23, 2020. Two other deputies were also sworn in on the same day. Deputy Debra Found was in the position of a Jail Lieutenant at one point. GT came across her working in the courthouse afterwards. Records were requested for any internal investigations or complaints that would lead a Jail Lieutenant to go down in rank to the courthouse. No responsive records were found.

Newnan, Coweta County, GA (April 4, 2025) – The GBI has arrested and charged former Coweta County Deputy Justin Alexander Woods, age 29, of Hogansville, Troup County, GA, with Battery, Simple Battery, and Violation of Oath by Public Officer.

On February 24, 2025, the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to investigate allegations that Woods used excessive force against an inmate housed in the Coweta County Jail.

The investigation indicates that Woods hit and tased an inmate who was fully restrained during an argument between the inmate and Woods. Assisting detention officers witnessed the incident.

Woods was booked into the Coweta County Jail.
